The Iron Horse Comes to St. Marys
The year 1877 was a landmark in the history of St. Marys – it’s the year the Lake Erie and Louisville Railroad came to town. Prior to that, horse or foot were the primary modes of transportation. The Miami and Erie Canal existed, but freezing winter temperatures closed it down, and it was slower and more expensive than the railroad. Two steam railroads and an electric interurban served St. Marys back then, but only one remains today. However, the contributions the railroads made to the community remain.
Learn more about the history of St. Marys railroads with Daniel Meckstroth in a Zoom presentation on Thursday, June 17, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Meckstroth has researched and presented on Railroads of Auglaize County, and he will share his findings with us in this informative look at our past. Please email stmaryshelp@seolibraries.org for log-in information and mark your calendars so you don’t miss this glimpse of local history.
