Smokey Bear Reading Challenge
The St. Marys Community Public Library will celebrate Smokey Bear and all he has done for our forests by holding a reading challenge throughout August. Participants will pick up a worksheet at the library that allows them to track their reading and take the Smokey Bear pledge! Once completed, participants will turn in their sheets to be drawn for a prize!

The St. Marys Community Public Library will celebrate Smokey Bear and all he has done for our forests on Wednesday, August 14th at 10:30 a.m. Join us in the meeting room at the library for games, refreshments, and other fun activities!
Help us celebrate this brilliant bear and enjoy a “campfire”!
All ages welcome, craft geared for school-age children!
The St. Marys Community Public Library will host the Girty’s Town Rendezvous
The St. Marys Community Public Library will host the Girty’s Town Rendezvous for a program and craft on Saturday, August 24th at 2:00 p.m. Presented by Harold Curry, this event will teach participants about pioneer camping and the Girty’s Town Rendezvous Campers.
We will also discuss campfire safety and make a knot-tying craft. All ages welcome, craft geared for ages 12+!
“Selfie” Scavenger Hunt Details
The St. Marys Community Public Library is hosting a local scavenger hunt to celebrate Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday and all he has taught us about fire safety. Participants will find Smokey and take a ‘selfie’ with him! Smokey can be found at the following businesses during their business hours:
- Agape Thrift Store
- First Financial Bank
- Girty’s Candy Store
- Hometown Pizza, Burgers and More
- Myers Produce
- Shoe Sensation
- State Farm – Laura Yelton
- The Gilded Greenhouse
- Three Rivers Federal Credit Union
- Willow and Wax
- The Grand Opera House and Theater (in their display window)
- and inside the St. Marys Community Public Library!
Pick up a scavenger hunt checklist at any selfie location, the library, or online at smcpl.org/smokeybearselfie.
After visiting one or more of the locations, participants should email their ‘selfies’ to stmaryshelp@seolibraries.org or upload it to our Google Form: https://forms.gle/hT42rivzqySm7fzM6 (a Google account is required to upload files in a Google Form)! One entry will be counted per selfie.
Prize winners will be drawn at random from all entries received by Saturday, August 31st.
Drawing will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
One winner per household.
