Author to discuss August Willich at the library

The St. Marys Community Public Library invites the public to an author visit featuring David T. Dixon on Monday, September 13, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. His book, Radical Warrior: August Willich’s Journey from German Revolutionary to Union General, will be the topic of his discussion. Books will be available for $35 at the presentation.

August Willich led a fascinating life, committed to universal human rights and willing to fight for those beliefs. He fought a duel with a disciple of Karl Marx and was an ingenious military leader, often risking his life in the face of overwhelming odds.

Eventually a friend encouraged him to come to St. Marys, where he lived out the remainder of his days. He founded the Shakespeare Club (which in turn founded the St. Marys Community Public Library), and he is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery.
